Fit for Life, Fit for Work

On Wednesday, the day started with a lecture by Prof. Jacqueline Goldin of the University of Western Cape. She made us aware of the interregional issues water management faces and that water is not only owned by one country. That is why it is important that the countries work together in cooperations to solve the problems we will face in the future due to water. This may be too much rain (such as monsuns or tsunamis) or too little (such as droughts).

Fit for Life, Fit for Work
The Group of Jonathan, Kevin, Julia and Linda is working for the "Fit for Life, Fit for Work" program.

One of the Etafeni's strategies to prevent the high rate of HIV infection amongst young people in Nyanga, is to engage unemployed youth or school drop-outs who have potential in intense work on themselves, help them to find employment and continue support for them for a twelve-month period.

The Life/Coping Skills course involves six weeks of personal development, including self awareness, setting personal goals, and how to resist pressures that will handicap achievement of one's goals. The second component of the course focuses on coping mechanisms. This covers how to cope with the areas of human sexuality, depression, conflict, and substance abuse.
The final part of the program is work preparedness. Here students learn how to develop their own work ethic and integrity, how to compose a CV, prepare for interviews and receive career guidance. The aim is to build the capacity of the individuals to be sucessful.
Etafeni provides the following training programs: Conversational English, driving lessons to license level, basic computer courses and basic typing.

All candidates were interviewed before the course and only those are taken, who Etafeni presumes they have the potential to reach the exacting standards of the "Fit for Life, Fit for Work" ethos.

Jonathan: "Today was a very important day for our project team "Fit for Life, Fit for Work". We made significant progress in collecting, selecting and prioritizing our ideas. Our focus in the remaining time will be preparing and implementing money making ideas as well as enhancing the project with a more entrepreneurial spirit. In the afternoon four of us wanted to join a 10k trail run. However, we missed it and therefore went on a run on our own enjoying the sunset at the promenade."
